I am looking at some places to free camp during a trip to The Cape later this year.
While browsing different places I see that to camp on lands controlled by one particular Community Council it will cost $160.00 PER NIGHT for two people in one vehicle.

There are NO Facilities so I wonder what you get for that money ????.

Go here and see for yourself, I note the date is 2009 but it`s the latest info I can find, please tell me if i`ve got it wrong.

GEEEEEZZ............... makes the powered site at C/Park in thread # 85184 look cheap @ $100.

That's right Scrubby. Permission must be obtained just to enter Aurukun Shire. Not sure if there is a fee for that.

But to camp anywhere within the shire requires a permit and very expensive fees as you found. You would have to be keen! And no further comment from me!!

Cheers

I'm not sure why the thread title focuses on "FREE" when the discussion is not directly related to that issue.

Being on land with multiple access issues, with the likes of Rio Tinto, Chalco etc having interests in this area, i could only suggest that insurance and administration of this agreement may account for most of the cost.

The costs to administer a remote area utilising the funds of a few travellers (due to the tight restrictions) during the dry season which cannot be absorbed by the locals, should not be compared to the commercial arrangement of a centralised caravan park in a heavily populated area IMO.

Just my thoughts...

"costs of administration"?? No facilities and absolutely no liability by Rio Tinto, Chalco, the shire, the "locals" or the bloody Easter Bunny. What administration???

I guess the options as suggested, plenty of other alternatives, or cough it up.

Hi OB,

Do you know for a fact that there is no cost associated with administering this arrangement? I am speculating that this may be one of the factors involved which has costs involved....how much, i'm not sure.

There are always liability issues attributed to these arrangements , as to who and how this is minimised is difficult to ascertain.

Whether the cost is appropriate, or there is some price gouging, we may never know. As you have said, there are other alternatives.

Hi Andrew
Sorry if I came over a bit harsh but these situations do peeve me a little. It looks like you get a piece of ground to park, no power, you supply everything and as per the permit fine print not even a rubbish bin and zero responsibility so I must admit I fail to see how such a high (IMHO) charge could be justified.

As far as liability goes when such a diverse range of possible "landowners" are involved I would hate to be the person footing the legal bill to take any issue to court.

Whilst i do think the cost is excessive, and believe i understand where you are coming from, these areas do have some additional costs associated with these arrangements eg. throw in a lawyer/solicitor/barrister etc and someone has to pay for it.

Thanks for your opinion OB ... in many ways i agree, however i try to keep an optomistic viewpoint on these arrangements. :)

Yeah, I try to view most situations from a "glass half full" point of perspective but geez it's hard sometimes.
"throw in a lawyer/solicitor/barrister etc and someone has to pay for it"...agree whole heartedly.......and guess who those "someones' are.....you and me mate

No facilities hey. Clearly none of you have been out to False Pera Heads then? Solar pump to feed water for the showers & even carports to park the car under. Without doubt our best campsite on the Cape, the bonus being the high cost keeps the numbers down & the riff raff out ;-) Did I mention the fishing. Barra up the nearby rivers, barracuda, sharks, coral trout on the reefs. Just brilliant.
While it wasn't that dear when we went I look at the cost a little differently. You spend $50,000 on your car, bolt on $20,000 worth of assesories, put $2000 worth of fuel in it to drive from one end of the country to the other. Why would I then skimp a few hundred dollars & miss out on some of the best places in Oz even if they are overpriced in comparison?
As far as administration goes yes the permits have to be processed & the main camp is nearly 2 hours from Arunkin for the locals to come out & slash the grass or maintain the track from time to time. With the small numbers that make the effort to go out there I doubt they take much money in the few months it's open but at least it's not locked up totally like many areas.
Cheers Craig.................

Hi Scrubby.

Would it be cynical of me to suggest they do not want you or any other visitors in their shire?

Hi
Been there twice 1968 & 1998

Lucky me just missed those charges.
The ferry was ,from memory, something like $30 & included the bush camp permit /entry permit
The campground @ the jetty was extra, did not camp there so do not know how much it was
Wonder what the ferry & that is NOW.

Thanks everyone for the replies and robust discussion.
Like I said I am only looking at possible places to camp, long stay, short stay or no stay, who knows, it depends upon a mix of many factors one of which is cost, and another of course is the fishing. LOL
There will be some occasions when we will be in caravan parks/camping grounds and other times "free" camping.
"Free" meaning not only in monetary terms but free as in " Free as the birds" away from any crowds.

Regards,

Scrubby.
